Mara
Mourão was born in Rio de Janeiro but now lives in Sao
Paulo with her husband Wellington Nogueira, the “Doctor
of Joy”. Mara is herself a Brazilian film-maker and
scriptwriter. In 1983 she moved to New York City to do a
course in cinema at New York University, and during that
period she made some short films in 16mm, including
Focusing, Captains and
Impressions.
Back in Brazil Mara developed a career also in
advertising and began as a production assistant to the
director, and finally developing successful advertising
campaigns from 1996-1998. Before dedicating herself to
cinema and TV, she directed more than 200 commercials,
many with prestigious brands such as Brastemp, Bi
Chocolates, Fiat and Bradesco (the largest bank in
Brazil). Parallel to The Despots that, she directed
Ameianoite (At Midnight) which won the
Special Merit Award at the 11th Tokyo Video
Festival.
Her first work as a director in the cinema was the
feature-length film Alô?!, released in
1998 and for which Mara wrote the screenplay. For this
film, she won the prize for best direction at the São
Vicente Film Festival. The film also won for best
actress for Myriam Muniz at the same festival and the
prize for best art direction at the Cuiabá Festival.
Avassaladoras () in 2002 was Mara’s second
feature-length film. In 2005 she directed the
documentary Doutores de Alegria, about a
group of doctors who dress up like clowns and go to
hospitals to bring some joy to young patients interned
there. In 2006 Mara directed the TV series
Avassaladoras for Record TV, with simultaneous
transmission on Fox and whose story was based on her
2002 film of the same name.
Mara is now in the final phase of making her latest film
“WHO CARES” a feature documentary about Social
Entrepreneurs, how they are born and what it takes to
become a change maker. She interviews icons of social
entrepreneurship from around the world, including Bill
Drayton (founder of Ashoka) and Nobel Prize winner
Muhamad Yunus.
Mara and Wellington live in a beautiful home in São
Paulo with their son Theo, 10 years old.
